Babtér & Primanima

Animation and visual culture, for over 14 years

The Budaörs Animation Base and Creative Space, the BABtér, opened its doors on the first day of the 5th Primanima festival with a wide range of activities. While Primanima is an international film festival for young animation filmmakers, held in Budaörs in october, BABtér is the venue where educational and cultural programs take place throughout the year, outside of the festival. BABtér is named after and founded by animation film director Tamás Patrovits, who has spent 30 years developing his educational approach based on a balance between the "analog" and digital worlds.

The Budaörs Animation Base and Creative Space, BABtér, opened its doors on the first day of the 5th Primanima Festival and has since then provided a permanent space for the colourful activities. The main sponsor of our cultural-educational programmes is the Municipality of Budaörs. It is mainly thanks to the support of the municipality that we, as BABtér staff, are able to think in terms of diverse, European-level programmes. All of us are free to use our creativity to contribute to the ongoing development of Budaörs' cultural and community life.

The animation and creative incubator in the BABtér offers educational and cultural programmes for all ages. The Animation Funzone has become a standing workshop, and our travelling Caravan frequently welcomes invitations from all over the country and abroad. Graphic arts education is provided by the Print House, where graphic arts and printmaking workshops, courses are available for curious visitors, students and professionals. During the summer BABtér also fills up with our day camp children, who can playfully learn about art. We manage to organise perhaps the most popular summer children's camps in the Budaörs area. Kids come from Tatabánya, Székesfehérvár, Martonvásár, and of course from Budapest as well as from Budaörs.

In addition to the practical side of education and talent management BABtér emphasises the importance of visual understanding in all its courses and workshops, as this receives very little attention in traditional forms of education. The BABtér team's mission is, among other things, to ensure that the next generations are media savvy and equipped to deal with today's manipulative use of the media, and to become more sensitive and careful to interpret the visual content around us.
With the 10th edition of the Primanima festival, we launched our PrimaTeen programme, in which pedagogues, psychologists and art therapists will give sessions for teenagers through animated films.

We also nurture the development of young film and animation makers. Hungarian talent have the opportunity to take part in professional workshops at BABfilmLab, a programme under the name of Csaba Szekeres. Also, Jumpstart programme, launched in 2022, provides a professional platform for young filmmakers from Central Europe to develop.

Primanima's big bouquet also includes PrimaZine, Primanima's online magazine, where from time to time you can find interviews, articles, shorts, podcasts about creators, professionals, festivals, projects and anything else we might consider inspiring in the world of graphics, visual culture and animation.

As this long list suggests, animation is not just about making films. The original meaning of the word is to inspire, to animate, to bring something to life, to encourage meaningful activity. And BABtér aims to serve this mission.
